Bio and Artist Statement

Robert Ponto grew up Robert Ponto grew up in Gallup, New Mexico and graduated from Gallup Cathedral High School. He attended New Mexico Tech University in Socorro, New Mexico and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from the University of New Mexico.

He interned for several architectural firms, concentrating on creating watercolor presentations for architecturally designed buildings. This started his interest in the watercolor medium.

He took a hiatus from architecture to travel with a musical trio across the United Stated, but eventually returned to architecture. He obtained his license to practice architecture in 1967, not just for New Mexico but also Colorado, Arizona, Nevada and Hawaii.

He continued to paint watercolors throughout his career. Two of his images were selected as Christmas cards by the Multiple Sclerosis Society and UNICEF.

Now retired, he enjoys painting and landscaping. Painting animals and birds is a way for him to recreate and remember his many nature excursions. For him, it is a way to relive his trips and share them with the viewers of his paintings.
