Marilyn Ortega – bio

Art Open House at NMCC, June 18, 2017

I am a native New Mexican, born and raised in beautiful Santa Fe, New Mexico. Recently retired and residing in both New Mexico and Tennessee, I picked up my camera and again found an undeniable craving for my photography. I began taking photos at social events, now being labeled the "Paparazzi" by my close friends. I'm just a gal with a camera waiting for an opportunity to capture forever memories of fond moments, special events and the beautiful landscapes of the great outdoors! I love chasing sunsets, occasionally the rising sun and everything in between. I love focusing on the natural beauty God created for our enjoyment that sometimes we don't see, but is all around us. I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy shooting it! I can't wait to see what my camera captures so that I can share it with you!

Artist Statement

I am a self-taughtphotographer recently retired and living my dream! My camera and I have been running rampant for about 17 years... I am drawn to my culture as a native New Mexican and enjoy showing my work to people across the country who perhaps have never seen the Southwest. I have participated in multiple arts & crafts festivals, showing my work in both New Mexico and Tennessee. I submitted a photo of my Labrador puppy to the NM Lottery for it’s “Lucky Dog” scratcher promotion and was selected out of 4500 entries! Entering a recent photo contest, my “Espanola Valley Sunrise” photo was selected and is featured in a regional northern NM 2017 calendar. With minimal edits to my work, I try to keep my photography as authentic and natural as possible. I enjoy conversations with people at art shows who express their appreciation to the natural look of my work. I don’t follow any special technique or function; I just love what I do! I find splendor in all things!
