New Options For Treatment of Early Stage Breast Cancer

For most women with early stage breast cancer, localized surgical removal of the cancer (lumpectomy) followed by radiation therapy provides long term cancer treatment that is as good as removal of the entire breast (mastectomy), with fewer side effects and complications, and much better cosmetic results. This approach is referred to as Breast Conservation Therapy.

There are two well established radiation therapy options that show excellent clinical results. The first is External Beam Radiation Therapy followed by a "Boost" of localized radiation. The second is a technique called Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI).

With External Beam Radiation Therapy, 3 to 6 weeks of daily sessions of radiation are delivered to the whole breast, followed by a higher "boost dose" of radiation delivered to the margin of tissue that originally surrounded the cancer, where cancer would be most likely to come back.

With Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI), radiation is delivered over a period of 5 to 10 days only to the tissue surrounding the lumpectomy site. This approach may be well suited to active working women or women at a long distance from a treatment center.

Patients and their physicians can discuss the benefits and risks of each of these options, and together agree on the approach that is best suited for each person.
